Founded in 1989 by former Creation Records press officer Jeff Barrett. Barrett had previously run indie labels Sub Aqua and Head. He was soon joined by Martin Kelly and Robin Turner. Heavenly acts as a management and promotions company as well as a record label.

Whilst Saint Etienne’s 1990s UK issues were generally distributed via Creation, Heavenly’s other releases have been distributed by a variety of companies:

1992 to 1994 – Manic Street Preachers signing to Columbia Records led to a short-lived distribution deal for the labels other acts.

1994 to 1995 – Heavenly was without a distribution deal. It released few records, focussing instead on press/promotions and its Heavenly Social club nights.

1995 to 1999 – In April 1995, Deconstruction became their new distributors. 2000 to 2009 – Heavenly became part of the EMI Music Group.

From 2010, Heavenly releases have been licensed to and distributed by Cooperative Music, [PIAS] Cooperative then [pias].
